Terrible Lizards Characters: Who's Who

The people (and mascots) of Dalton's Dinos, using only what WDR Studios has said about them — no story spoilers beyond the setup.

Verified Applies to v1.0.9 (PC) 8 sources

You play as Jordan, a college student whose car breaks down outside Dalton's Dinos in 1992. Stella, a paleontologist and old friend of the owners, guides Jordan over a headset while you search for Dalton Coolidge and his son Dev. The attraction's costumed mascots are the Paleo Pals: Benji, Alistair, Stephanie and Dennis Dev.

Jordan

Role
Player character
Who
College student-athlete road-tripping Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles before the fall semester Dev
Personality
“A pretty typical late-teen kid of the early '90s: polite, eager to help, and not above the occasional wisecrack” Dev
Trivia
Athletic enough to explain the parkour — but cannot swim Dev

WDR's launch posts refer to Jordan as “they”, and we do the same Dev. Jordan's quips are a big source of the game's humour; the team wrote many lines while playtesting with a document open, adding barks wherever a hint or reaction felt right Dev. CGMagazine's review calls Jordan a second-year engineering student Press.

Stella

A longtime friend and colleague of Dalton and Elena — the three rose together as paleontologists. Stella is off-site when Dalton's Dinos goes quiet, reaches Jordan, and becomes “a voice in your ear and a kind of guide” Dev. Early builds had her talk only through fixed phone terminals; the team switched to a headset so conversations happen while you keep moving. She also feeds you puzzle information — for example the elevator keypad code in Level 2 (1677).

Dalton & Elena Coolidge

Dalton Coolidge founded the attraction with his wife Elena after they discovered a rare “duelling dinosaurs” fossil nearby Dev. The fame — and the money — built Dalton's Dinos a couple of miles from the dig, close to Route 66 for tourist traffic, and the attraction's revenue funded their own digs so they needed fewer grants Dev. In the game, Dalton is “always one step ahead of you”: you follow his breadcrumbs and retrace the path he took Dev. Searching “what happened to Dalton” is the core mystery; the answer is in the story (see spoiler section).

Others you meet

WDR says there are other characters “better left for players to discover” Dev. Community walkthroughs mention a character called DJ in the deep caverns of Level 4 Community. Many staff members exist only through notes and tapes — the writers built each around a single idea of that person's perspective Dev.

The Paleo Pals

The Paleo Pals are “the mascots and guides for Dalton's Dinos”, and in-world they “help bring in the money to run the place and fund questionable scientific research” Dev. Their suits are a deliberate homage to Five Nights at Freddy's — but built to be suits a real person could wear; Benji's long neck works because the wearer looks out through a hole at the base of the neck Dev. Artist Eden designed them. Each has a talk box in the attraction (see the Paleo Pal Review achievement).

Benji

The original Paleo Pal and the lead developer's favourite. A real, life-size Benji suit exists, and an official Benji plush is in development. DevDev

Dennis

One of the four Paleo Pal mascots named by the developers. One of the most searched characters. Dev

Alistair

Stephanie

Pterry — whose name is on the notes achievement, Pterry's Scrapbook — was added to the line-up midway through production Dev.
