Terrible Lizards Dinosaurs: Every Creature

Three monstrous dinosaurs hunt you through Dalton's Dinos and the caverns beneath it. Here is what each one is, where it appears, and what the developers have said about it.

The main trio in Terrible Lizards is the Brontosaurus, the Allosaurus and a Dilophosaurus–human Hybrid Dev. All three are cave-adapted monsters rather than realistic animals, designed with artist RJ Palmer Dev. You cannot fight any of them: there are no weapons, only movement Official.

The roster

The team chose Jurassic-era animals that could plausibly fit New Mexico. The Dilophosaurus lived earlier than the other two but won the role for its silhouette and crest, because no Jurassic raptor felt iconic enough Dev.

Brontosaurus

First seen
End of Level 1 — the gift shop floodlight sequence Community
Encounters
Escape chase out of the gift shop, then repeated chases and hunts across the Level 2 digsites and caverns Community
Dev notes
The hardest creature to implement: its length made roaming AI hard to fit into play spaces Dev

The developers describe it as “such a fun and different take on the species” Dev. Early builds had it floating, stretching its legs and walking on its front legs only. In chases, community guides recommend moving carefully while it searches and sprinting once it commits Community. Patch 1.0.9 fixed an invisible collider left after boulders fall in the second Bronto hunt Dev.

Allosaurus

Encounters
The hunting area near the train tunnels, then patrols through the freight area and rail cavern Community
Dev notes
The creature lead's favourite — “just cool and lethal” Dev

The Allosaurus drives the open hunt/arena sections, where it roams while you finish objectives Dev. The second Allo hunt has you carry four fuses to a panel; a bug where not all four worked was fixed in 1.0.9 Dev. One memorable development bug left players alive in its jaws, being carried around Dev. An “Allo tooth” later becomes a key item Community.

Dilophosaurus Hybrid

What it is
A Dilophosaurus–human hybrid, originally planned as a human–raptor Dev
Designer
RJ Palmer (principal design); real-world references such as a coral-reef skeleton for its ribcage Dev
Inspirations
The Void's skull-faced creatures, the newborn from Alien: Resurrection, and an unused Jurassic Park 4 hybrid concept Dev

The Hybrid is the face of the game's marketing and the monster WDR says would fit Dead by Daylight as a killer Dev. Where and how it appears is a story spoiler; the official making-of video is safe to watch:

How to survive any of them

  • Keep moving. The game is built around momentum parkour — run, jump, climb, wall-run, bounce and slide Official. Stopping is usually what gets you caught.
  • Read the route before the chase. Chases reuse the moves the level just taught you Dev. If a room introduces a new move, expect to need it at speed.
  • In hunts, work in loops. Grab an objective, break line of sight, then go for the next — like the gift shop fuses, where you create distance before stopping at a box Community.
  • Dying is cheap. Checkpoints are frequent; “Join Us for a Bite” is even an achievement.

Design & why no feathers

Because the game is set in 1992, the team “had to pull back 30 years of dinosaur knowledge” and present dinosaurs the way the public saw them then — scaly, not feathered Dev. The monsters were concepted through moodboards and several artists before RJ Palmer produced two to four concepts per creature; about ten people took each from concept to in-game. Nothing was cut — the team even added Pterry midway through production Dev.

The lead developer's verdict on how the lizards are doing: “in pretty terrible shape” Dev.

Not dinosaurs: the mascots

The costumed Paleo Pals — Benji, Alistair, Stephanie and Dennis — are the attraction's mascots, designed as an homage to Five Nights at Freddy's and to real '90s costume suits Dev Dev. A mascot pursues you during the gift shop fuse puzzle Community. See Characters.
