Terrible Lizards Story & Ending Explained

What happens at Dalton's Dinos, when it happens, and how the game tells it — with the ending hidden behind a spoiler gate you have to open on purpose.

Terrible Lizards takes place on September 19, 1992 at Dalton's Dinos, a dinosaur roadside attraction off Route 66 in New Mexico Dev. Stranded student Jordan searches the empty attraction for its missing owner Dalton Coolidge and his son, and follows his trail into excavation sites and facilities beneath it. There is one main ending — no branching endings Dev.

The premise (no spoilers)

The Steam page sets it up: the staff have vanished, a voice on a phone inside begs you to help find a missing child, and your car has died miles from anywhere — “No cell phones. No rideshares. No help coming” Official. The voice is Stella, a friend of the owners, who asks Jordan to find out what happened to Dalton and his son Dev.

The attraction is bright and kitschy at first — exhibits, animatronics, a gift shop, mascots. Then it “connects to excavation sites, mining operations, underground facilities, and larger spaces that visitors were obviously never supposed to see”, and the game becomes less about the attraction and more about what has been happening underneath it Dev. The marketing line: the Paleo Pals help “fund questionable scientific research” Dev.

Timeline

  1. Before ~1977Dalton and Elena Coolidge, paleontologists, find a rare “duelling dinosaurs” fossil near Route 66 in New Mexico. Dev
  2. ~1977Dalton's Dinos opens a couple of miles from the dig. (The developers say it had been open “about 15 years” by 1992.) Dev
  3. Years before 1992Changing traffic on Route 66 and the Interstates thins the crowds; the attraction stays open but is “past its prime”. Dev
  4. Sep 1992Jurassic Park is filming somewhere in the same world; the book exists. Dev
  5. Sep 19, 1992Jordan's car dies outside Dalton's Dinos. The staff are gone. A phone rings. Dev

“~1977” is our arithmetic from “about 15 years” in the developer Q&A, not an in-game date.

How the story is told

  • Main path — play straight through and you get a complete story; almost all narrative can be skipped except key cutscenes Dev.
  • Headset calls with Stella while you keep moving.
  • Full-motion video — filmed in-world recordings that act as tentpole story moments (VHS tapes you watch in the attraction).
  • Notes and audio tapes — optional, character-driven, for the bigger picture (see collectibles).
  • Environmental storytelling and the attraction's own propaganda.

Tone & references

The writer's shorthand: “Jurassic Park meets The Descent, with a little bit of The Goonies” Dev. Easter eggs reference Halo, Portal, Jurassic Park and BioShock — including one direct BioShock quote hidden somewhere — and game inspirations range from BioShock to Call of Duty to Five Nights at Freddy's Dev. Levity comes from Jordan's '90s-teen snark and the attraction's satire. CGMagazine found it goes “for humour and scares in equal measure” Press.

The ending

Confirmed without spoilers: one main ending. Branching choices were planned early and cut for scope Dev. Finishing unlocks the Finally achievement and New Game Plus.

Show how the game ends (major spoilers)

Per a community walkthrough Community, the final stretch runs through the crew lift camp: you restore the camp lights, blast into Cavern B for the crew lift key, and start the lift together with DJ. A creature forces Jordan off the lift; you catch the moving elevator via a wall-run route and ride up. A dark passage, a short cave and a ladder bring Jordan out on the surface beside Stella's car, followed by the closing title and credits (“Yellow Line”).

What it means — who knew what was happening below Dalton's Dinos — is left for the notes and tapes. Asked whether a secret government agency knew, the lead developer only said “it'll become pretty clear who knows what's happening as you play through the game” Dev.

Is there a secret ending?

Nothing official suggests one. The developers say there is one main ending Dev, and post-game content is New Game Plus with four modifiers. If a hidden scene turns up, we'll document it with a source.

Sequel or DLC?

Nothing announced. WDR says the plan is to support the launch with fixes first; whether the next project stays in the Terrible Lizards world depends on how this game does Dev.
